Sanctuary Volunteering

On April 6, 2018, Irida Kakhtiranova – a western Massachusetts wife to a U.S. citizen and mother of three U.S. citizen children and sole wage earner for her family – entered into sanctuary at the Unitarian Society of Northampton and Florence. Irida came to the United States from her native Russia in 2003 and now faces deportation. She has requested sanctuary while she fights to keep her family together.

USNF is seeking volunteers to help us provide accompaniment to Irida as well as meals, groceries, and rides. To sign up to volunteer, please fill out our on-line Sanctuary Volunteer form below and we’ll then be in touch with more information.

  • Accompaniment: Accompaniment shifts at USNF range from 2 hours to overnight. Accompaniment volunteers are required to attend a volunteer training session (1.5 hrs) that includes information about expectations and protocols.
  • Rides: Rides are local. USNF’s Safe Congregation policy requires a CORI check (Criminal Offender Record Information). It is also important that the car you use not be used to transport pets as Irida’s family members have allergies.
  • Meals: Volunteers cook and deliver dinner to Irida -- take out food from a local restaurant is great too.

Donations are also always welcome – click here to learn more.
