April 2019

During April we’ll explore the theme of journey – journeys physical and metaphorical, real and imagined, our own journeys and the journeys of the ones we love. This was written by the Reverend Marni Harmony, who served the Orlando, Florida, UU church for twenty years and is now its Minister Emerita. She titled it “If We Do Not Venture Out.”

If, on a starlit night,
with the moon brightly shimmering,
We stay inside and do not venture out,
the evening universe remains a part of life we shall not know.

If, on a cloudy day,
with grayness infusing all
and rain dancing rivers in the grass,
We stay inside and do not venture out,
the stormy, threatening energy of
the universe remains
a part of life we shall not know.

If, on a frosty morning,
dreading the chilling air before the sunrise,
We stay inside and do not venture out,
the awesome cold, quiet, and stillness of
the dawn universe remains
a part of life we shall not know.

If, throughout these grace-given days of ours,
surrounded as we are by green life and
brown death, hot pink joy and cold gray
pain and miracles—always miracles—

If we stay inside ourselves and do not venture out
then the Fullness of the universe
shall be unknown to us
And our locked hearts shall never feel the rush of worship.

The days are lengthening and the sunlight brightens our outlook, beckoning us to venture out. Our mammal cousins who burrow down for the winter have heard the summons. Here and there a crocus has opened. In our south-facing flower beds, the top shoots of tulips and narcissi and even some intrepid daylilies are in view. They conspire with the lengthening days to call us out of our own close burrows, out of the more sedentary patterns winter imposes on us, and out of the spiritual doldrums. Will you stay inside yourself this spring, or will you venture out? What journey calls to you? What might you discover right in our own congregational community? What bit of the Fullness of the universe is waiting for you to know? We offer one another opportunities for learning, exploration, and an entry into parts of life we otherwise will not know. Opportunities to unlock our hearts in the spirit of love. Let’s continue to venture out together. It is a joy to be your minister.Janets signature
