I have a habit of recycling holiday cards for re-use as gift tags. Time spent cutting off the fronts gives me a chance to remember and think about old friends, the ones I have known for more than half my life, the ones whose weddings I attended, whose old boyfriends or girlfriends I approved or disapproved, whose parents I remember, whose siblings I have met.

One of those, Sally, is a friend from graduate school some thirty years ago. She has always been adventuresome and curious, while I am more of an armchair traveler. She has cajoled me into sharing a minor adventure or two, over the years. One unseasonably warm New Year’s Day, we went swimming together in Long Island Sound. It was a quick dip.
