USNF Celebrated 200 Years on February 23, 2025
The Unitarian Society of Northampton and Florence (USNF) commemorated its 200th anniversary with a year-long reflection and celebration of its rich history and evolving mission. Formed in 1944 through the merger of the Second Congregational Society of Northampton and the Free Congregational Society of Florence, USNF’s roots trace back to the early 19th century. Both founding congregations emerged from bold rejections of the prevailing religious and political norms of their time.
- Northampton’s founders were inspired by Unitarian ideals, seeking a compassionate alternative to Calvinist doctrine.
- Florence’s Free Congregational Society, born from a Utopian community, embraced Universalist values and championed abolition, women’s rights, and economic equity.

Culminating Celebration: Pride Unfolding
The 200th anniversary came during a transitional period between settled ministers, offering a unique moment for introspection and visioning. The congregation honored its legacy while embracing change, reaffirming its commitment to being a nurturing, justice-seeking, and love-centered community.
The anniversary year concluded with a vibrant weekend aligned with Northampton’s LGBTQIA+ Pride. Highlights included:
- A benefit concert by The Smithereens for Trans Re-Location
- An evening reception and concert with Peter Mayer (of Blue Boat Home fame)
- An inspired Sunday service weaving together USNF’s past, present, and future—and followed by an abundant community potluck.
