Information about the book discussion
According to Ibrahim X. Kendi, “This is the book I’ve been waiting for. The Sum of Us can help us come together to build a nation for us all, with policies that benefit us all.” On September 27 at 7pm, we’ll be discussing The Sum of Us, the NY Times bestseller by Heather McGee that has had a big, positive impact since it came out in 2021. If you’re interested, please send an email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. so we know how many people to expect.
In The Sum of Us, McGee shows how a root cause of many problems today is the assumption that “if people of color win – on anything – then white people lose.” She also describes how many problems can and have been solved through multi-racial coalition-building. The book is both incisive analysis and great storytelling about the ways this “zero sum” assumption took hold in our society and how it can be changed. If you don’t have time to read the whole book, even a chapter or two will tell you a lot. And if you like podcasts, listen to The Sum Of Us podcast where McGee presents in-depth cases on successful racial justice campaigns, like the Memphis multi-racial water pipeline actions co-led by Justin Pearson (one of the “Tennessee 3”). Her interview with Pearson is truly inspiring!
PS - The Sum of Us has also been adapted for readers 10-14 with a companion study guide, and the book’s website is now a hub for anti-racist activists.
We hope to see you on September 27 – there will be a lot to talk about!
